This place has thought through everything. The presentation of the food was beautiful and the servers would explain each dish to each individual person as they were served (which was a lot out of a 4 course meal). Every component of the dishes was carefully crafted and extremely high quality. Definitely recommend this place for special occasions or a nice dinner out!
MoreHighly recommend the flexible prix five menu. Great though has been put into the details, such as the wine pairing across the 16 possible dishes. The staff is extremely knowledgable and friendly. The way they described the food made me want to scarf everything down immediately.
MoreEverything we tried tasted really good and had bold (buy not overpowering) flavors. The atmosphere is really chill. The music isn't too loud and the space has a warm feeling. The restaurant wasn't too crowded when we went on a Monday night. The servers were friendly but didn't explain the menu or how things were prepared unless asked specifically. Their explanations were fairly brief when asked. The pork was exceptional as well as the egg and roe dish. I liked the chocolate and Carmel dessert too. I would definitely recommend this place for a fancier but relax meal.
MoreVery creative dishes that pack a ton of flavor. The sunchoke "risotto" for instance
MoreGood service. Nice atmosphere. The food is a little overrated. It's good, but not exceptional. The ingredients used are seasonal and fresh and the dishes are imaginative. Some of the dishes (the egg and the chocolate) were a little more herbaceous than I would have liked. This is a fun place for a date.
MoreAster is a super solid restaurant. All our dishes were well-prepared, with the exception of the kampachi appetizer, which I found to be a bit too fishy - like it wasn't entirely fresh. The potato dumplings (probably my most favorite dish) and the duck entrée, however, were both delicious. I finished off my meal with the frozen chocolate and bourbon meringue, and that too was yummy. You also can't beat their price: $65 for a four course prix fixe. The reason I'm giving 4 stars and not 5, is partly because of the fish, but more because I didn't think the restaurant was SO amazing so as to warrant the Michelin star it has. So, Aster is a wonderful 5-star non-Michelin, and a great 4-star Michelin.
MoreBeautiful food, fantastic flavors, friendly staff. The pick your own course option was very reasonably priced for what we received. Made my birthday very memorable.
MoreWhat charming service - like dining with friends...and the food is delightful. A bargain prix fixe menu for a Michelin started restaurant!
MoreEverything was TOP notch! Place was beautiful, tasting menu was delicious, service was amazing. I’d go back. It was UNDERpriced ;)
MoreThe food was very well executed, visually pleasing and excellent flavour combinations. It's a four course prix fix format with vegetarian friendly choices. I had the beef carpaccio to start, soft cooked egg, pork tenderloin main, strawberry dessert and the contralto cheese plate. We also had the sourdough bread. All were excellent flavored. Also the interior design has many soft surfaces which control noise and make conversion easy. But... portions were small; we had burritos afterward to fill us up. Although the food was well executed, only four courses isn't sufficiently interesting variety. The wine list had good choices but not many choices, and was pricey relative to other similar restaurants. And there is too much wait time between courses: four courses took 2 hr 45 min so be sure and go with people you enjoy talking with. Overall I probably won't go back until the menu expands to 6 or 7 courses and service speeds up. And I'll bring my own wine.
MorePrix fixe or a la carte menu - 4 courses with ingredients to satisfy any dietary restriction. Fantastic sourdough. Reasonable prices. Wine pairing is great too. First time went early around 6p and services was fantastic. Waiter took time to chat and explain the contents etc. Second time went around 9 and didn't get much interaction/attention-possibly because busy or towards end of night.
MoreFood was underwhelming. A couple of courses were better than the others. Ambience was okay. Waiters took wrong orders for wines also the pricing of added items were quite high.
MoreCame here for a brunch. portion is just right, food is well presented & yummy. also order a basil tea, which is good but not great. when i came at 11am there was not many people and service was quick. very comfortable and clean environment
MoreThis is one of the best restaurants in the city and highly underrated. The four course menu is very reasonablly priced given the quality, plating and flavor of the dishes. Service is attentive and not too over the top, definitely not intimidating like other Michelin starred restaurants! Love that the kitchen is exposed so you can see your food being made through the whole process.
MoreBeautiful decor. Came here for brunch and had several small bites and really enjoyed the duck too.
MoreThe duck entree and strawberry desert were excellent. In retrospect it would have been good to get the four course menu as we were still a bit hungry at the end.
MoreReally loved the place and food was a culinary treat. Ricky guided us through the food experience. Calm and comfortable place. Looks like they prepare different fixed menus for the dinner and I loved through it. Will recommend for anyone who would like to have a nice gastronomic feast.
MoreAmazing food. Every dish was delicious and well presented. They offered a wine pairing that worked out most of the time. We had two vegetarians in our group, and they were delighted with the caliber of dishes the chef prepared. Would definitely eat at Aster's again.
MoreI went here for brunch and it was absolutely amazing. The menu is small but anyone could find something to love on it. The dishes are a very high end, creative take on brunch and they tasted amazing. I would absolutely recommend.
MoreFood and service was excellent.
more at (insta/ceilingkatz): Before leaving the bay area, I was able to have dinner at Aster (@aster_sf) with my Amazon sister (inside joke). Aster sits in Mission district and is run by Chef Brett Cooper serving creative Californian cuisine with a hint of asian flavor. There was the steak with sichuan pepper and the salmon with the miso sauce. Overall I was a bit confused by the direction of the courses but also intrigued by the new mixture flavors in those dishes. I really like the matsutake dish here that tried to use sunchoke to mimic a risotto. Mixed with quince for sweetness and nepitella for a nice floral note, it is a well constructed dish. #yummy 😋
MoreWe ordered 4 course dinner which was priced at $59/person. In a nutshell, it was an underwhelming experience. Serving size of each course was too small, one of the main entrees (duck) was undercooked and dessert (hazelnut cake) was too dry to swallow. Service was good as waitress was very friendly and helpful. For ambiance, tables were packed too close to each other. Overall, not an upscale dining experience I thought it would be.
MoreService was top notch! We had the prix fix and wine pairings. Food was all incredible, pairings were a perfect match. Only downside was that they didn't have cocktails.
MoreQuite experimental, the taste and flavors tend to surprise you, from the savory dishes to the desserts. Overall a pleasant experience.
MoreReally enjoyed this place. Unpretentious, inventive, modern California cuisine. The restaurant only opened a couple of months ago - they are doing very well for being so new. The starters were nice and fresh with good ingredients but did not awe me; the entrees, on the other hand, were excellent - I had a really exquisite lamb dish. I would be happy to come back.
